Regional Queensland Songwriters Exposed

The art of songwriting is truly alive and well throughout Queensland with a remarkable 1500 entries received in the 2007 Q Song Awards.

From the total, more than 600 entries were received from Regional Queensland Songwriters.

This year’s 600 regional entries also marks a 300 per cent jump on the 200 regional submissions received for Q Song 2006.

Q Music Executive Officer Denise Foley says Q Music – the non-profit organisation behind the awards – plans to launch a series of workshops and seminars throughout the state over the next 12 months in order to further support the growth of songwriting talent in regional and remote areas.

“It has long been an objective of Q Music to reach out to those artists in regional areas who face many challenges in building a career within the music industry,” Ms Foley says.

“Artists in regional areas have limited access to information and resources to help build their fan bases and Q Music aims to work with regional partners to bridge that gap.”

Of the 600 entries, almost 40 regional artists will now progress to the final round of judging in the various genre categories – one of them will also go on to collect the ABC Regional Award and $1000 prize money.

Among those finalists is Emma – Louise Lobb, a secondary student from far North Queensland, who so impressed the judges, she has been selected as a finalist in The Courier-Mail People’s Choice Award for her track Kim’s Song.

Emma Louise has also been invited to perform at the Awards Ceremony at the Tivoli, August 14th, 2007.

All finalists and event details will be announced on Monday July 9th.

Tickets for the 2007 Q Song Awards go on sale Tuesday July 10th.
